False alarms cost police time, money |
An increasing number of false alarms set off by wandering pets, weather, faulty security systems and clumsy homeowners cost the Saskatoon Police Service at least $750,000 last year. In 2008, of the 8 ,300 alarms that went off, 114 turned out to be actual break-ins. Around 3,000 were cancelled while police were en route to the call, while slightly more than 5,000 were false alarms where officers were dispatched to investigate. |

Oil prices make planning budget difficult: finance minister |
REGINA — The lowest oil price in years is taking an immediate whack at Saskatchewan’s finances while making putting together next month’s provincial budget a great deal trickier, Finance Minister Rod Gantefoer said Thursday. But Gantefoer told reporters the government’s forecast — made up of a cross-section of private sector projections — is that oil will average about $50 US a barrel for the 2009 calendar year and $53 US for the 2009-2010 budget year that starts April 1. |
